Course contents:
Evolution through natural selection, biological classification, systematic division of the animal kingdom, as well as the build and biology of separate groups of animals.
Learning outcome:
A candidate who has completed the course shall have obtained the following:Knowledge:The student should have a basic overview of the animal kingdom, as well as knowledge of individual animal groups' build, way of life and environmental affinity.Skills:The student should have learnt to identify selected animals' phylum, class, order or family level, and explain where and how they live and how their build reflects adaptations to habitat and way of life.General competence:The student shall after the course be familiar with Norwegian wildlife.
Learning activities:
The course consists of lectures that illuminate the most important parts of the syllabus. Each lecture is followed by a connected laboratory exercise where students are given practical experience in each topic. The course ends with a four-day field course where the focus is on identification and placing of animals that are collected from nature in the animal kingdom.
Teaching support:
The candidate\'s learning can be supported through academic supervision during the teacher\'s office hours.

Mandatory activity:
Approved laboratory course, participation in field course and the first lecture in the autumn semester.
Written exam (multiple choice), 3 hours, is held after the autumn semester, counts 4/5. Systematic test, 1 hour, is held after the field excursions in May-June, counts 1/5. It is not necessary that the student passes every evaluated element in the course to pass the entire course. A passing grade is based on the overall quality of the entire evaluated material.
Nominal workload:
Structured teaching: 75 hours. Own effort: 75 hours.

Minimum requirements for entrance to higher education in Norway (generell studiekompetanse)
Reduction of credits:
Overlap with ECOL110. 1 credit reduction.
