Course contents:

The following topics are presented during the course:

·         Probability theory

·         Random variables and probability distribution

·         Special important probability distributions in Medical Research

·         The Central Limit Theorem

·         Estimation and demands to Estimators

·         Interval Estimation

·         Formulation of hypotheses

·         Testing hypotheses in Binomial and Poisson model, in continuous parametric- and nonparametric          
          models as well as in kontingency kables

-         Correlation and regression analysis

Learning outcome:

Through the course the students are expected to reach the following platforms:

Knowledge:

·         Know the main principles of applied biostatistics.

·         Know properties of important probability distributions

·         Understand main principles behind estimation theory and statistical hypothesis testing, correlation and    
          regression

Skills

·         Be able to describe statistical patterns using tabular and graphical techniques.

·         Be able to establish a confidence interval and formulate and perform testing of hypotheses in specified
          situations

-        Be able to run a simple linear regression analyses

Learning activities:
The course consists of a mixture of lectures, assignments and group discussions
Syllabus:
The main syllabus is a compendium produced by the course teacher, Stig Larsen. Additional books will be suggested (recommended reading) during the course.

Mandatory activity:
Attendance is compulsory. An attendance record of at least 75% is required to pass this course.
Assessment:
A written exam, graded as Pass/ Fail. The written exam is held the last day of the course.

This course is available for PhD students at NMBU Campus Adamstuen. Other PhD students or researchers may apply. Priority is given to NMBU Campus Adamstuen students.
