About this course

Lectures: Water as a resource, water types, water quality, protection of water bodies, and methods for treatment of drinking water. Furthermore, classification of environmental quality in freshwater, chemical and biological quality requirements is included. In addition, selection of sources for water supply and disadvantages / advantages / danger of pollution of different water sources are treated. Legislation in connection with water supply / water management, including the water regulations. Group work: 3-4 students collaborate on a relevant topic that is presented in plenary for all students who follow the course. Excursion: 5-6 hours duration.

Learning outcome

After completing the exam, the candidate must

• gain an understanding of the importance of water as a resource and how water resources are managed

• gain knowledge of different drinking water sources, need for measures in the catchment area and water treatment in accordance with the drinking water regulations

• be able to assess water quality and pollution sources as a basis for classifying environmental quality and setting environmental objectives for water bodies in accordance with the Water Framework Directive / Water Regulations

  • The lectures cover main parts of the course. Guest lecturers will concretize/exemplify how the knowledge in the course can be used in Norwegian water management. The students participate actively in group work, where they choose a topic from a given list of actual subjects. Final results are presented in plenary. Excursions are arranged to a drinking water facility in the Oslo / Viken area to learn how these facilities work in practice.
  • Discussions are arranged under supervision of the teacher. The course intends to establish a good dialogue between the students and the teacher.
  • VANN200.
  • Written examination (3 hours). Grading system: A-E / Not passed.
  • The examiner is involved in the planning and revision/evaluation of the course as well as in the assessment of the written examination.
  • Oral presentation of group work.

    Participation on excursion.

  • Lectures: 20 hours. Discussion: 6 hours. Group work: max 5 hours of supervision. Excursion: 6 hours.
