Course contents:

Tree growth and wood properties: Relationships between silviculture, tree growth, wood morphology and wood properties.

Wood physics: Density, wood-water relations, capillary movements and diffusion, thermal, electrical and acoustical properties, and dynamic behaviour.

Mechanics and rheology of wood: Elasticity (stress and strain), orthotropic elasticity, plasticity, creep, crushing strength, bending strength, shock resistance, torsional properties, and shear strength. Wood decay mechanisms with emphasis on biological decay

Learning outcome:


The student should have advanced knowledge about the properties of wood and how these may relate to the use of wood in different applications. The student should know how to relate this to the chemistry and anatomy of wood, and further how this depend on silviculture and tree growth. The student should have knowledge about scientific theory and methods to do research in the field. 


The student should know how to accomplish scientific wood property studies. The student should know how to behave critically to different information and how to use the information to structure and make reasonings with in the field. The student should be able to analyze data with statistical software.

General competence:

The student should know how to convey and exchange opinions within the field, both in written and orally. The student should be able to find and use knowledge on new areas within the field.

Learning activities:
Lectures, exercises, more and less extensive written assignments, excursion. The exercises are used to concretise the theoretical material. The students must present some of the papers in class. In addition, the students will be given a number of questions related to the course which they voluntarily can answer and get feedback on during the course.

Total assesment: 

  • Written exam (3 hours) counts 2/3.
  • Portofolio assessment with Exercises and assignments count 1/3.

Both evaluations must be passed to pass the course. 

Nominal workload:
70 hours of lectures and exercises. 305 hours of self-study (semester assignment, report writing, independent study).

Special requirements in Science
Type of course:
Ordinary lectures: 34 hours. Exercises: 30 hours. Discussions/student lectures: 6 hours. In total: 70 hours.
The course is intended for the students in Forest Business, Forestry and structural engineering for Buildings and Architecture.
The external examiner evaluates the written exams.
