Wood quality: Silviculture and wood quality, modelling. Wood physics: Density, wood - water relations, capillary movements and diffusion thermal, electrical and acoustical properties, and dynamic behaviour. Mechanics and rheology of wood: Elasticity (stress and strain), plasticity, creep, crushing strength, bending strength, shock resistance, torsional properties, and shear strength.
The student should have knowledge about the physical and mechanical properties of wood and how they vary. The student should know how the different properties relate to the chemistry and anatomy of wood, and know how silviculture and tree growt affect the different wood properties. The student should also know about methods to change or modify the properties.
The students should know how to accomplish laboratory research and collect data for wood property studies, also when it comes to how silviculture and the growth of the tree affect the properties.
The studtent should be familiar with how the wood properties of the most common Norwegian species vary and what this means for the different use of wood.
Lectures, exercises, more and less extensive written assignments, excursion. The exercises are used to concretise the theoretical material. The students must present some of the papers in class. In addition, the students will be given a number of questions related to the course which they voluntarily can answer and get feedback on during the course.
