About this course

The course will focus on the methods for conducting life cycle assessment (LCA) of solid waste and in the water and wastewater sector, where students will learn to practice all the main elements of the method as described in the textbook and ISO standards. The focus will also be on applications to identify how environmental and resource information can be used for strategic development in companies, for product improvement and for marketing.

Learning outcome

Knowledge objectives:

Students will acquire advanced knowledge about conducting analyzes of man-made environmental challenges, with a focus on life cycle analyses (LCA).

Students will have knowledge of how environmental analyses are used by companies and authorities.

Skill objectives:

Students will acquire skills in calculating environmental and resource impacts related to processes and products. The candidates must be able to analyze and interpret results from their own analyses. Students will receive a basic introduction to the methods for life cycle assessment and environmental declaration of products and services.

  • Learning activities

    Lectures/workshop, assignments. The work with the assignments is done in groups.

  • Teaching support

    The students' learning is supported by the teachers' supervision during office hours.

  • Syllabus

    Chapters in text books, papers and software. An overview will be given at the start of the semester.

  • Prerequisites

    At least one of these courses: FORNY220, TBA210, TIP200, THT291, THT261 or THT271.

  • Recommended prerequisites

    Basic knowlegde in environmental and resource sciences.

  • Assessment method

    Combined assessment based on the three assignments (group work). All assignments must be approved to pass the course.

  • Examiner scheme

    The external and internal examiner jointly performs quality control of the submission assignments and the grading guide. The external examiner reviews the internal examiner's assessment of a random sample of candidates as a calibration at certain intervals according to the faculty's guidelines for exam grading.

  • Mandatory activity

    Submission of three assignments (group work). The assignments count towards the final grade in the course.

  • Teaching hours

    Eight hours of lectures/problem solving sessions per week, probably distributed across two days.
