The contents of the course include patterns of consumption and waste trends/composition of waste. The focus will be on private waste generation, and waste from enterprises, including collection, treatment and disposal of wastes and hazardous waste. Issues like waste reduction, source separation methods and recirculation, biological, chemical and thermal waste treatment methods will be included. Special attention will be paid to treatment of organic wastes: composting, aeration and anaerobic treatment. Recycling technologies will be focused. Environmental issues of waste handling systems will also be included in the course.
The students should reach an analytical level. The students should also acquire an overview of the treatment methods for organic waste and be able to plan and dimension treatment plants. The students will be introduced to central topics in solid waste handling. The circulation-based purification system is a central element of the course.

Lectures and introduction to problem based tasks are approximately 200 hours. Excursion: 8 hours.
The external and internal examiner jointly prepare the exam questions and the correction manual. The external examiner reviews the internal examiner's examination results by correcting a random sample of candidate¿s exams as a calibration according to the Department's guidelines for examination markings.
