Sludge Regulations ; Visits to treatment facilities.
Learning outcome:
The students will obtain a better understanding of the challanges related to water resources and quality in Norway and globally, laws and rules for treatment of drinking water and sewage from both household wastewater and food industry wastewater. They will obtain increased knowledge of water use, water quality parameters and specific loading. They will know the difference of ground and surface water and be able to describe and explain different treatment metods for obtaining safe drinking water. They will also be able to describe treatment metods for mechanical-, chemical-, and biological treatment methods and shall also know about different nitrogen removal methods and sludge treatment and recycling. The students shall also be able to plan a sustainable application of the sludge. They are to be able to explain the negative effects on the environment by pollution and waste generated by households and industry. The students should also be able to explain the importance of retaining valuable resources from waste and waste water.
Learning activities:
Lectures. Obligatory exercises. Excursion that gives good insight into practice.
Teaching support:
Course responsible offers academic supervision during office hours, after appointment.
Syllabus:
Water and wastewater technology (currently only in Norwegian) by Norsk Vann (2012)
- Kemira : About Water treatment (or the swedish version: 'Konsten at rena Vatten') (purchase at www.kemira.com)
- Powerpoint presentations from lectures (available in Fronter)
- Vannforsyningens ABC (available at www.fhi.no)
Prerequisites:
A basic course in chemistry, for example KJM100 (Chemistry)
Recommended prerequisites:
A basic course in microbiology is recommended, for example equivalent to BIO130 Microbiology.
Mandatory activity:
Term paper
Assessment:
3-hour written examination (100 %). Exam may include MCQ and/or individual questions.
Nominal workload:
For a course of 10 credits, ca. 300 hours of work in total is normally to be expected. That means that in addition to structured teaching, ca. 10 hours of work must be expected per week.
Entrance requirements:
Special requirements in Science
Reduction of credits:
THT272, 9 credits
Type of course:
Lectures: ca. 50 hours. Excursion: ca. 4 hours. Exercise: ca. 4 hours. Exercises.
Note:
The course is designed for both Master"s students in Food Science and Water and Waste Technology.
Examiner:
The external and internal examiner jointly prepare the exam questions and the correction manual. The external examiner reviews the internal examiner's examination results by correcting a random sample of candidate¿s exams as a calibration according to the Department's guidelines for examination markings.
Allowed examination aids: Calculator handed out, no other aids
Examination details: One written exam: A - E / Ikke bestått
