Teaching exam periods:
This course starts in Autumn parallel. This course has teaching/evaluation in Autumn parallel, .
Course frequency: Annually
First time: Study year 2005-2006
Preferential right:

Students whom are joining the course for the first time have priority on the lab.

Students on M-BA, M-IØ and M-MPP have priority

Course contents:
The course contains 4 hours of lectures and theoretical exercises, plus 2 hours of laboratory exercises per week. Key content of the course is atomary bonds, crystals, phase-diagrams, reaction-speed, microstructures, metallography, deformation and failure, thermomechanical treatment of materials, metals, polymers, composites and wood. Furthermore, gluing, welding and other methods are discussed, as well as the most common corrosive processes for materials and metals.
Learning outcome:

The properties of materials are dependent on chemical composition and structural patterns. The main goal of the course is to give the students basic knowledge to see this in context, and be able to investigate further into literature about the structure of specific materals, properties, strength and utilisation. Furthermore, the students will have gained knowledge about standardised test methods for materials and key properties for calculation of strength/durability.

Learning activities:
Central chapters in the literature covering materials and materials technology are lectured. The students are trained in specific subjects which are lectured during theoretical exercises and laboratory exercises. The laboratory exercises are concentrated on procedures for measuring key properties of materials, analysing results, reporting as well as studies of microstructures. The course contains a one-day excursion to materials industry. Granta Ces Edupack program for material selection and learning.
Teaching support:
The responsible teacher is available for support and guidance in ordinary working hours, and can also be reached by e-mail.
Syllabus:
William D. Callister, Jr. Materials Science and Engineering, an introduction. Written material which is distributed during lectures/exercises.
