Course frequency: Annually
First time: Study year 2015-2016
Course contents:
Statically indeterminate structures. Description of loads and load cases on building structures. Calculations of snow and wind loads on buildings according to Eurocodes. Earthquake loads. Combination of loads. Design of steel structural elements in carrying lateral and gravity loads. Design of steel trusses, purlins, beams and columns. Buckling of steel members. Beam- column method. Design of a single storey building using hand calculations. Design of bolted and welded steel connections. Bracing of buildings. Sustainable structural design solutions.
Learning outcome:
The course will provide an understanding of how the complete load-carrying structure responds to lateral and vertical loads, and the student should have acquired the knowledge required for the structural design of buildings with basic configuration.
Learning activities:
Analysis of statically indeterminate structures is presented. The following lectures cover the presentation of different loads and load cases on buildings. Special interest is placed on the calculation of snow and wind loads on buildings according to Eurocodes and sustainable structural design. The curriculum is presented in lectures and by literature laid out on Canvas. Upon having acquired sufficient knowledge of the behavior of building structures under influence of various types of loads, the students are given a project. The project is to design a single storey building placed in Ås using hand calculations. Design examples of steel members and connections are presented. Different types of bracing are studied. Basic principles and applications of prestressed concrete are presented. Use of Eurocodes.
Teaching support:
The lecturer and teaching assistant are available during office hours.
