Course contents:

The student gets a comprehensive introduction to a specific area in bioinformatics and applied statistics. The topic will vary from year to year.

Learning outcome:

KNOWLEDGE: Students will learn the ideas in the selected topic. They will become familiar with the conditions for and use of the methods in question. Implementation will often also be relevant.

SKILLS: Students should be able to perform statistical and/or bioinformatic analyses. They should be able to interpret the results of the analyses and explain what has been done, the results and the weaknesses and limitations of the analyses.

GENERAL COMPETENCE: Students will be able to apply what they have learned in their studies, their research and later in their professional life. At the same time, they should be able to ask critical questions about results that they generate or are presented to them (e. g. in the media or other research) and assess the validity of these results.

Lectures and exercises / computer exercises.

The teacher will be available for questions either in person or via email. The course`s webpages will be regularly updated.

Prerequisites:
STAT100 or corresponding knowledge. 
Recommended prerequisites:
Will depend on the topic lectured
Mandatory activity:
The student will have to complete obligatory tasks to be approved for the course and to be allowed to take the final written exam. Students who fail the course need to perform these tasks again. 
Assessment:
Oral exam, with a pass/fail grade. 
Nominal workload:
Lectures: 28 hours. Exercises: 28 hours. Self study: 69 hours.

Special requirements in Science
Type of course:
Two hours of lectures each week.
Note:

The course will focus on various subject areas that is not covered, or only lightly covered, in other STAT- or BIN- courses. The contents of the course will thus vary from year to year. 

The course is only given if resources are available.

Students who fail the course need to perform these tasks again.

An external examiner evaluates the oral exam.
