Course contents:

The goal of the course is to give the student a comprehensive introduction to a specific area in applied statistics. The area can vary between years, but the focus will be biostatistics. In 2016 the topic is analysis of high dimensional data. The course will give an introduction to visualization, prediction, classification and variable selection with data where classical, statistical methods have limitations.

The main method of the course will be Partial Least Squares (PLS), while related methods will fill out where it is natural. Datasets will be from key problem areas at the Campus and possibly students¿ own cases.

Learning outcome:
After completing the course the student should have a good overview of the particular applied area. The student should be able to use the methods of the area to analyze data and make computations at a reasonable level of complexity.

Prerequisites:
STAT100 or corresponding knowledge.

Mandatory activity:
The student will have to complete obligatory tasks to be approved for the course and to be allowed to take the final written exam. Students who fail the course need to perform these tasks again. 
Assessment:
Oral exam, with a pass/fail grade. 
Nominal workload:
Lectures: 28 hours.
Exercises: 28 hours.
Self study: 94 hours.

Type of course:
The teaching is organized into 4 blocks of 2 days each. Each day will contain 7 hours of teaching.

The course will focus on various subject areas that is not covered, or only lightly covered, in other STAT- or BIN- courses. The contents of the course can thus vary from year to year.

An external examiner evaluate oral exam.
