Course contents:
  • Forest history, forest ecology/disturbances and legislative basis for forest management in Norway.   
  • Environmental status of the forest. Ecosystem services from the forest. Forests and forest management for different interests - forest sector, recreation and outdoor activities, biodiversity, cultural heritage and wildlife management.
  • Systems for collection of environmental values in forests. Environmental management and certification. Economic consequences of multiple-use.
  • Planning of ecosystem services in forests.
  • Ecosystem services in tropical forests.
  • Conflict and conflict management. 
Learning outcome:

The students should have the following learning outcome from the course:


Knowledge of the term ecosystem services in general and for forests in Norway. Detailed knowledge of public regulations of timber production in Norway due to the environment and people's welfare. Knowledge of sociological and economic theory concerning multiple-use of forests. Knowledge of systems for forestry certification in Norway. Knowledge of narratives and discourses on Norwegian forestry.


Ability to collect required information on qualities in the forest and use of the forest in a limited area (property - municipality). Ability to assemble and synthesize such information by use of GIS in a multiple-use plan, partly as text, partly as maps.

General competence

Master oral and written presentation. Know conflict mechanisms and methods for conflict resolution.

Lectures, excursion, term paper and self-studies.

SKOG200 or equivalent. Students without this subject may gather the most vital preparatory knowledge on their own accord.

Mandatory activity:
Excursions and term paper.
Oral exam.
Nominal workload:
Ca. 250 hours. Divided on lectures, excursions, presentations, assigments, preparations and self-study.
Entrance requirements:
Minimum requirements for entrance to higher education in Norway (generell studiekompetanse)
Reduction of credits:
SKS302, 10 ects.
Type of course:
Lectures: 4-6 hours per week. Excursion: 1 day.
An external examiner participates and grade final oral exam.
