Course contents:
Theoretical perspectives, principles and models related to supervision. Supervision in scientific subjects and methodology. Framework conditions for master and PhD supervision (at NMBU). Relational aspects of the supervision. The problematic supervision. Cross-cultural supervision. Ethical perspectives on supervision tied to relation, process and Product.
Learning outcome:


The candidate:

Has in-depth knowledge of central themes, theories, processes, tools, methods and key questions related to supervision of master and PhD-students

Has general knowledge about research and developmental work in the field of supervision in higher education

Can update her or his knowledge within the field


The candidate:

Can evaluate and use relevant strategies and methods in master and PhD supervision that promotes ethical awareness, critical thinking, creativity and autonomy

General competence

The candidate:

Can analyze relevant ethical questions related to supervision

Has sufficient knowledge to communicate about and discuss key questions related to supervision with colleagues and students

Can contribute to original thinking about organizing and conducting master and PhD supervision at their own faculty and at the university

Learning activities:
Lectures, sharing experiences, discussions, work on cases, colleague supervision and reflective essay.
Teaching support:
Colleague supervision.
Reference list will be distributed prior to course start and will be made avalable in Canvas.
Experience with supervision of master- or ph.d-students.
Recommended prerequisites:
University Teaching Development Program.
Mandatory activity:
Preparation: paper about a challenging supervising dialogue/situation, submitted before course start..Between gatherings: Planning, conducting and reflection about a supervision session, submitted before second gathering.Minimum 75% attendance in the teaching.

Essay 3500 - 4000 words.

Essay is to be submitted 3 week after the last gathering

Grade: Pass/not pass

Nominal workload:
Teaching in two gatherings 25 hours, 25 hours for preparation, planning, conducting and reflection on supervision of master og PhD students. 100 hours for reading  course litterature, steering documents, and writing essay. Total 150 hours.
