Course contents:
The students are to develop their use of educational theory by studying literature on educational theory and written texts where the theories are applied to students" research questions. If three or more students participate in the course, it will include mandatory seminars where students take an active part by presenting, discussing and by providing feedback on other students texts. This constitutes the main part of the course, is given in the autumn semester and contains two compulsory assignments.
Learning outcome:
The course shall provide students with adcanced knowledge in science education or agriculture education by investigating relevant literature and key issues in occupational practice, and apply this literature to their own problem formulations within these fields of study. The students are expected to develop the correct use of citations and be able to discuss and review literature. Literature shall be used actively in the students" written work and empirical research. Through presentations and discussions, the students should develop their own opinions about educational theories and principles in the natural sciences. The course aims to give the students a firm basis for their master's theses.
Learning activities:
Supervision in the compulsory activities by both teachers and fellow students. Using teaching theory in both writing and conversation, the student is to develop his/her own teaching theory regarding real situations and problems.
Teaching support:
Supervision in all compulsory activities.
The syllabus comprises a mandatory core literature and individually chosen literature 300-600 pages (depending on whether articles or books are chosen).
LUR students are given prioriy access to the course. LUR students must have exames in the following courses before given access to PPUT301: PPXP, PPRA301, PPPE301, PPFD301, natural science courses. Science teacher education. Agriculture education students: Relevant bachelor degree and minimum 1 year occupational practice.
Recommended prerequisites:

Two written assignments.

1) An essay on the argument structure of selected literature.

2) The second assignment is an literature review in light of a problem formulation.

  • The aim of these assignments is to develop skills which are important when writing a master´s thesis:
  • discuss relevant problems in teaching theory
  • find and choose literature to discuss a problem
  • using quotes from the chosen literature correctly, critical literature review
  • use the literature in a coherent manner
  • give an independent review of the literature and solve the problem.

The first assignments accounts for 40 % of the final grade, and the second assignment accounts for 60%.

Nominal workload:
600 hours.

Type of course:
Plan for the course will be handed out at course start. When more than 3 participants the gatherings in the course will be compulsory. There are two compulsory assignments and presentations in the autumn semester.
An external examiner approves the assessment arrangements and assesses a random selection of the compulsory, written assignments.
