Course contents:
The course will provide a thorough introduction to the immune system, its organization and function. This is the basis for an in-depth study of special conditions linked to the immunology of the mucous membranes, particularly in the gut, and the mechanisms involved in the development of food allergy. Special emphasis will be put on explaining the difference between immune-mediated hypersensitivities and other forms of intolerance reactions to food. The significance of food for efficient protection against infectious microorganisms, and the involvement of the immune system in the development of lifestyle diseases will be covered. Through lectures and supervised discussion groups the students will get the oppprtunity to develop in-depth understanding and to penetrate key theoretical issues particularly relevant for their future careers and practice.
Learning outcome:
The students will acquire thorough knowledge of the organization and function of the immune system, particularly regarding the understanding of food allergy and other food-associated hypersensitivities. They will get a clear understanding of the differences between food allergy and food intolerance reactions. The students will be able to suggest investigation for clarifying the cause of adverse reactions to food. They will also have knowledge of the effect of diet on the intestinal microbiota and the gut-associated immune system. The health consequences, particularly regarding the development of lifestyle diseases, will be enlightened.
