Introduction, packaging materials (glass, metal, fibre, plastic, new materials), packaging methods (MAP, packaging machines, active and intelligent packaging), health safety, packaging optimisation and environment.

Group work with presentations : Practical packaging.

Exercise: Gas packing (MAP).

Excursion: Packaging manufacturer (and if possible user of packaging (food manufacturer).

Learning outcome:

Students are expected to understand the significance of packaging for foodstuffs and their quality.

They are expected to be familiar with production methods, properties, scientific terms and uses for the most important packaging materials and be able to ask the right questions when choosing between different materials.

The students are also expected to have some knowledge about food products requirment to packaging and storage, in addition be familiar with the environmental implications of packaging.

Knowledge of food production equivalent to MVI100. Food chemistry and biochemistry equal to KJB210.
Recommended prerequisites:
Food microbiology/chemistry/technology equivalent to BSc in Food Science.
Mandatory activity:
Exercise, excursion and group work.
Written exam 70%, group work 30%. Both parts have to be graded E or better.
Nominal workload:
150 hrs in total. Lectures: 26 hours. Exercises: 4 hours. Group work: 20 hours. Excursion: 8 hours. 92 hours writing of journal/group work and self study.
