Course contents:

Biotechnology is very important in the transition towards a greener and more sustainable society. Chemistry plays an important role in domestic life, and you will learn about the compounds we and our environment consists of and how environmental pollution affects both nature and man.

The Master thesis consists of an independent research project during the last semester of the study.The Master thesis can be written as a monograph or scientific article. Students receive guidance from an appointed supervisor and co-supervisor s). The supervision will ensure that students find literature, and get practical advice on data collection and laboratory work, as well as ethical guidelines. The exam is in the form of a student presentation and a scientific discussion about the masterproject.

Learning outcome:

KNOWLEDGE: After completing the thesis, the student will be able to conduct and implement an independent research project on a selected topic.

SKILLS: Use relevant theories and research methods as a tool in research. Analyze and draw conclusions from an independent research project.

GENERAL COMPETENCE: Convey information based on the independent research project in writing and orally. Read, understand and make use of research litterature. Adhere to ethics guidelines.

The student is entitled to 80 hours of supervision totally including assessment of the thesis
Teaching materials developed individually.


Contains 80 credits in engineering sciences (nationally specified) that includes 30 credits mathematics, 20 credits physics, 10 credits economics / social studies, 10 credits informatics, 10 credits statistics, 80 credits chemistry and 80 credits biotechnology.

Mandatory activity:

Approved Master`s contract between student and supervisor (s),with detailed progressplan, to be handed in at the Faculty before the project starts.

Master's students must sign out from the laboratory before the Mater's exam. The sign-out must be approved within the deadline for results.

Written assignment with oral defense, counts 100%

1500 hours
Entrance requirements:
The course is reserved for students who are admitted to the Master's degree in technology, chemistry and biotechnology
Type of course:
The student work full-time with the thesis in two semesters.

Supervision in English on demand.

The main supervisor must be a scientific employee at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences. Co-supervisors may be employed at other universities or external research institutions / industry. Co-supervisors must be approved by the main supervisor and the responsible Faculty. The total hours of supervision are to be divided between all supervisors. 

Master's students must sign out from the laboratory before the Mater's exam. The sign-out must be approved within the deadline for results.

The internal and external examiner will participate in the assessment of the thesis and the oral examination.
