About this course

Course contents: The aim of the course is a further development of students knowledge and abilities within drawing, shape and color and strengthening their visual competence for problem solving within the subject of landscape architecture. The course aims at showing the student how this experience can be used during idea and concept development and when communicating their spatial ideas. The course will be structured to cover different drawing techniques (i.a pencil, charcoal, watercolor and pen drawing),and be based upon both direct observation and abstraction and the use of geometric in drawing. The course will also provide a basic knowledge of color theory and practice. We will also work with form principles, spatial understanding and composition in 2D and 3D. The classes will be held both within the studio and within the landscape and campus environment, and follow a specific thematic structure. Each new thematic period will be preceded by lectures where examples of the chosen theme will be shown and discussed.

Learning outcome

Learning outcome: Knowledge goals: The student should be able to describe the volume and spatial relationships in 2D and 3D drawing. Knowledge of perspective, axonometric drawings, plandrawing. Basic principles of composition, proportion, spatial understanding. The course gives basic knowledge of materials, tools and techniques. After the course, the student will have basic knowledge of abstraction and through abstraction processes be able to reveal characteristic features.

General competence: This course will develop aesthetic sense and critical thinking and enhance the students ability to discuss and choose on aesthetic issues. The course focus is on creative problem solving and to develop and stimulate creative thinking.

  • After the course the student should be able to use appropriate working techniques with drawing, shapes and color as a method. The course aims to develop good visual readability in drawing and spatiality using colors through practical exercises. The course aims to strengthen the students abilities to solve problems creatively and with a personal expression. The student should be able to use the knowledge gained from this course to enhance analytical problem solving performance in further studies (LAA, Ling, Byreg etc).
  • Students will have weekly supervision and guidance both individually and within groups and lectures.

Teaching methods: There is an emphasis on practical drawing, shape and color exercises with support and guidance from staff. Thematic tasks are given by staff and students will be asked to complete within a given time scale. The students will be encouraged to work self sufficiently and further develop ideas within the themes
