First time: Study year 2016-2017
M-LA, M-BYREG, B-LI and M-NF. It is desirable with balanced distribution of students from different specializations to achieve interdisciplinarity in group-work.
The course starts with a large Norwegian road or railway project in it`s early planning phase. Based on political framework, landscape analyzes and strategic goals the students will study and plan/design a current distance in this landscape. The students will go for a trip at the actual site for some days to do field research. Throughout the course the students will use digital tools as GIS and be given lectures in digital drawing (Focus Cat Road/Landscape and Infraworks), and will use this for designing the project.
The student will have knowledge about political framework, laws and guidelines that underlies road- and railway planning in Norway. This is for example NTP (Norwegian Transport plan), State plan guidelines for coordinating housing, area and transport planning and European Landscape Convention.
The student will have knowledge about regional and municipal planning according to PBL (the planning act) and KU (consequence analysis) linked to development of road- and railway projects. The student will have some knowledge about KVU (Document for choice of Concept).
The student will have knowledge about road- and railwayplanning as strategic tools for business- and residential development and land development in regions, cities and smaller towns.
The student will have knowledge about aesthetical, environmental and technical challenges linked to road- and railway planning and processes that are necessary to establish good, sustainable and long-term solutions with high quality.
The student will have knowledge about different approaches for analyzing landscapes, and how this can contribute to understanding and communication.
The student will have knowledge about the most important handbooks from Statens vegvesen for planning and designing roads.
The student will have knowledge about relevant terminology for planning and designing roads and railways.
The student will have skills in delineation of a project-area and formulation of relevant issues for the task.
The student will have skills in developing strategies, concepts and goals for a project based on landscape-analyzes of a project area.
The student will have skills in working independently within the agreed deadlines, will be able to quality assure a work, and will be able to collaborate in a group in developing and complete a project-document.
The student will have skills in implementing analyzes of knowledgebase, in presenting this so readers and listeners can understand the content, and develop solutions and proposals in interdisciplinary team.
The student will have skills in substantiate priorities in a project-document from scientific sources and will be able to implement engineering of road or railway trains (or contribute to this) out of technical guidelines (handbooks from Statens vegvesen).
The student will have skills in working in different scales and using different tools, such as sketches, sections, photos, tables and digital presentations to promote understanding and communication.
The student will have skills in using precise terms and good language for making written reports.
The student will have skills in keeping oral presentations to convey a project in a clear and simple way to promote dialogue with different persons involved.
The student will be able to work in interdisciplinary teams with complex issues.
The student will be able to reflect on his/hers own professional practice and understanding of role and be able to make a plan for better interaction with other people and disciplines.
The student should have acquired general competence about organization of Norwegian transport sector, political leadership and project execution within the sector.
Lectures, theoretical studies, fieldwork, excursion, individual work, teamwork in project, lectures, learning digital skills in computer-lab.
Course literature (course library), tutor's supervision, student feedbacks, mid-term evaluation and final evaluation of sensor, computer training with external teacher

Competences equivalent to the first three years of the studyprogramme for Landscape Architecture / Regional Planning / Landscape engineer / Nature Management or other relevant discipline. Contact course Coordinator for questions about relevant background.
Skills in landscape engineering, skills in landscape description and analyzes for the purpose of planning, or basic knowledge of Norwegian planning Law and environmental Law.
Fieldwork, excursions, seminar and presentations. It is not possible with absence from fieldwork, even with sick leave. The main excursion is basic for the Student project.
Attendance and participation at lectures and commitment in team-work. Individual smaller assignments and one big group project assignment with oral presentation of this. Continuous exam: A-E / not passed = F.
Totally 300 hours of work.
Minimum requirements for entrance to higher education in Norway (generell studiekompetanse)
Type of course:
40 - 45 hours lectures inclusive computer training, 30-40 hours fieldworks inclusive transport, 10-15 hours critiques, 25 hours excursion, guidance about 1.5 hours per. student.
External examiner conducts censorship of project assignment together with internal examiner (course leader), and comments on course contents and structure.
