Course responsible: Yngve Henning Stenstrøm
Teachers: Dag Ekeberg
ECTS credits: 10
Faculty: Faculty of Chemistry, Biotechnology and Food Science
Teaching language: EN, NO
(NO=norsk, EN=Engelsk)
Limits of class size:
100
Teaching exam periods:
This course starts in Spring parallel. This course has teaching/evaluation in Spring parallel.
Course frequency: Annually
First time: Study year 2004-2005
Preferential right:
M-KJEMI, M-KB
Course contents:
Gain comprehensive knowledge of organic spectroscopic methods, especially UV/visible, IR, NMR (especially 1H and 13C), 2D NMR (especially COSY, HMQC, HMBC etc.) and MS. Gain a good understanding of how and when the methods are used, and be able to use the methods in an independent way for determining the structure of unknown organic compounds. Special emphasis will be placed on natural products.
Learning outcome:

KNOWLEDGE:

The student shall:

  • Know the basic terms within organic spectroscopy
  • Know the most common techniques within organic spectroscopy
  • Know where to find information of the different methods
  • Know where to find information on  interpretation of the different type of spectra

SKILLS:

The student shall:

  • Be able to interpret the common type of organic spectra
  • Know the limitation of the different types of instruments and spectral data
  • Know what is needed to document single molecules (minimum acceptable data)

GENERAL COMPETENCE:

The student shall:

  • Be able to identify and elucidate a structure based on spectral data
  • Know what type of spectral data that is necessary to confirm and document a specific structure/compound
Learning activities:

Lectures are given during the first part of the semester. In the second part, exercises will be reviewed by the teacher in cooperation with the students.

Lectures.Colloquia/group work.Midterm exam with detailed evaluation.Independent study.

The course will start with lectures and a few selected examples of each spectroscopic technique. When all lectures are done, there will be problem solving sessions and colloquia where the students will work on their own with problems under supervision and then in plenum on the blackboard. Students should be active and ask questions.

Teaching support:

The office hours will be announced at the beginning of the semester. Questions sent by e-mail will also be answered.
