This course starts in Autumn parallel. This course has teaching/evaluation in Autumn parallel.
Course frequency: Annually
First time: Study year 2003-2004
B-BIOTEK (biochemistry specialization), B-KJEMI, M-KB.
The teacher gives lectures throughout the teaching period. Problem solving together with a teacher. A teacher will go through laboratory exercises (compulsory). Laboratory work (compulsory). Help with the laboratory report and the calculation exercises is offered by the teaching assistants.
Please note that the course will start late in October.
Become familiar with basic organic spectroscopy and laboratory techniques with special emphasis on natural substances. Gain a general understanding of the reaction mechanisms in organic chemistry. Be able to view organic chemistry as part of a larger context with special emphasis on the reactions of the various functional groups.
Knowledge: Be able to set up simple organic chemistry experiments including simple syntheses. A few name reactions should be recognized.
Skills: You should be able to use the basic knowledge on new problems. Laboratory excercises are an important part of this course.
Lectures. Colloquia with a teacher/teaching assistant present. The teacher will go through assignments. Laboratory work, which includes preparation for the exercises (compulsory). Independent study.
Help with problem-solving and lab exercises will be offered by teaching assistants. Questions outside class will be answered in office hours which will be announced at the beginning of the semester.

Reduction of credits:
KJM211 gives 0 credits, if taken together with KJM210.
Type of course:
Note! This course starts at the turn of the month October/November. Before that, it is recommended to follow lectures and problem solvings in the course KJM110.
KJM211 consists of: Lectures: 4 hours per week (total of ca. 20 hours). Laboratory work: 6 hours per week for 5 weeks (total of 30 hours). Joint lab review: 1 hour a week for 5 weeks. Joint review of problem solving: 2 hour per week (total of 10 hours) during the last half of the course. Calculation exercise help: 2 hours per week. The lecture load will be heavier towards the second half of the semester, in order to accommodate KJM110 more easily.
All laboratory excercises (5 days altogether) are mandatory.
KJM211 is offered for students with basic organic chemistry knowledge equivalent to KJM110 who want to learn more organic chemistry. This means that KJM210 = KJM110+KJM211.
The course is open for a limited number of students only. Students for whom KJM211 is mandatory are guaranteed place. Other students may be accepted based on their grades from KJM110 or equivalent courses.
An external examiner approves the examination questions and marks 25 selected exam papers.
