(NO=norsk, EN=Engelsk)
Limits of class size:
1000. For each laboratory group there is only room for a maximum of 24 students. A sufficient number of groups will be etablished.
Teaching exam periods:
This course starts in August block. This course has teaching in August block, teaching / evaluation in Autumn parallel, .
Course frequency: Annually
First time: Study year 2003-2004
Preferential right:
B-BIOTEK; B-MAT; B-BIOL; B-HV; B-MINA
Course contents:
Lectures are given by the teacher throughout the entire semester. The teacher will go through calculation exercises and laboratory exercises (the latter is compulsory). Work in the lab is also mandatory. Teaching assistants offer help in connection with the writing of laboratory reports and the solving of calculation exercises.
Learning outcome:
Gain an overview over the most common groups of molecules in organic chemistry and their nomenclature (naming). Gain an understanding of the properties and reaction patterns (general mechanisms) of organic substances. Place organic chemistry in a larger context.
Knowledge: Basic knowledge of nomenclature and concepts in organic chemistry. A few name reactions has to be known.
Skills: Use the basic knowledge on new problems. Laboratory excercises are an important part of this course.
Learning activities:
Lectures. Colloquia with a teacher/teaching assistant present. The teacher will go through the exercises. Laboratory work, in which the teacher goes through the exercises (this is compulsory). Independent study.
Teaching support:
Help with problem-solving and lab exercises will be offered by teaching assistants. This will start some weeks into the parallell. Questions outside class will be answered in office hours, which will be announced at the beginning of the semester.
Fronter.
Syllabus:
Hart, Craine, Hart: Organic Chemistry - A short course. (13th ed. (i.e. the latest edition)). Yngve Stenstrøm: Laboratory booklet.
Prerequisites:
KJM100 or equivalent basic knowledge in chemistry.
Recommended prerequisites:
Mandatory activity:
Laboratory course and joint review. The laboratory quiz on Fronter (one for each lab class), has to be passed prior to each lab class. Please note that ALL laboratory exercises are compulsory.
Assessment:
Test 1: 1 hour, counts 15% of the total grade. Test 2: 1 hour, counts 25% of the total grade. Approved laboratory course: counts 10% of the total grade. Final exam (2 hours): counts 50% of the total grade and is given in the second half of November.
Nominal workload:
Lectures: 40 hours (including 2 hours of multiple-choice tests held during the semester). Laboratory exercises: 20 hours. Laboratory review: 5 hours. Journal writing and preparation for the exercises: 20 hours. Problem solving exercises (jointly with other students and with the teaching assistant present): 20 hours. Individual study: 195 hours.
Entrance requirements:
Special requirements in Science
Reduction of credits:
KJM210. A full exam in KJM210 gives 0 credits for KJM110.
Type of course:
August block: We will start the lectures in the block period (4 hours per week). This teaching contains both lectures and problem solving.
The autumn parallel: Lectures: 4 hours per week (a total of ca. 40 hours). Laboratory work: 4 hours per week for 5 weeks (total of 20 hours) Joint review: 1 hour a week for 5 weeks. Joint review of problem solving: 1 hour per week for 9 weeks. Problem solving help: 2 hours per week.
The lecture load will be heavier during the first half of the semester in order to accommodate the lectures for KJM210. The laboratory work will start when we have lectured the most basic part of the chemistry.
Note:
The course starts in the August block. In the block period the more basic part of the course, i.e. the first 2-3 chapters, will be lectured. This is highly recommended for all students and will ease the understanding of the remaining chapters.
Please note that the laboratory course is mandatory; you must complete all excersises and have an approved labjournal prior to the final exam to get a grade.
Please note also that the registration deadline is as for August block courses!
Examiner:
An external examiner will monitor that the level of the examination papers is satisfactory.
Allowed examination aids: No calculator, other aids as specified
Examination details: Continuous exam: A - E / Ikke bestått
