Limits of class size:
There is room for 8 laboratory sessions per week, with a maximum of 48 students per session. This can be expanded to 10 lab session in extraordinary cases.
Teaching exam periods:
This course starts in Spring parallel. This course has teaching/evaluation in Spring parallel.

Course contents:
Lectures throughout the entire semester. Laboratory exercises including quiz (compulsory). Guidance is offered by teaching assistants on laboratory reports and calculation exercises. Students will be trained in health, safety and environment (HSE) in the laboratory.
Learning outcome:
Students will understand basic chemical principles and reactions. They will be able to name simple chemical compounds and judge the physical and chemical properties of the substances based on their structure. Students will be able to conduct simple laboratory experiments and report and evaluate the results. The course gives a foundation for further study of chemistry and other natural sciences.

Syllabus:
Textbook: Raymond Chang, General Chemistry, Essential Concepts. In addition, the laboratory booklet is part of the syllabus. A detailed syllabus will be given out at the start of the course. The textbook may change.
Prerequisites:
Second year chemistry from upper secondary school, or KJM007.MATH100/MATH111/STIN100 or equivalent.

Mandatory activity:
Laboratory exercises with reports.Completion of one quiz per lab exercise (performed in Canvas).
Assessment:
The assessment is comprised of the following:
  • Test 1: 1 hour, counts 20 % of the total grade.
  • Test 2: 1 hour, counts 20 % of the total grade.
  • Test 3: 1 hour, counts 20 % of the total grade.
  • Test 4: 1 hour, counts 20 % of the total grade.
  • Test 5: 1 hour, counts 20 % of the total grade.
  • Test 4 and 5 are helt at the same time
Nominal workload:

250 hours distributed as follows:

  • Total number of lecture hours: 46.
  • Total number of laboratory hours: 24.
  • Compulsory calculation assignments in connection with laboratory work: 18 hours.
  • 4 tests during the semester: 5 hours.
  • Individual study: 157 hours.
Entrance requirements:
Special requirements in Science
Type of course:
  • Introduction to the laboratory work: 3 hours; one session in the beginning of the term. 
  • Lectures: 4 hours per week (2 x 2 hours).
  • Laboratory work: 4 hours per week for 6 weeks.
  • Laboratory service ('question sessions') and help with the mathematics assignments (voluntary): 2 hours per week.
Examiner:
An external examiner will be used to control that the level of the examination questions are satisfactory, and marks a minimum of 25 selected examination papers.
