Course contents:
The laboratory course is built up as follows: 8 exercises, each lasting about 6 hours, one exercise per week.
Lectures (14 hours).
Writing of six journals, length 8 - 15 pages. Simple laboratory reports (fill-in form) for the other excercises.
Two or three students per group.
Learning outcome:
The students will learn elementary biochemical techniques:
- Pipetting of small volumes.
- Elementary Spectrophotometry.
- Standard Curves.
- Measurement of protein concentrations.
- Measurement of enzyme activity, including enzyme kinetics.
- Chromatography of proteins.
- Gel-electrophoresis of proteins.
- Measuring anti-oxidants and vitamin C.
- Gels and viscosity.
The laboratory course will give some depth study of parts of KJB200.
Learning activities:
Lectures. Exercises in laboratories (with intensive guidance). Writing of journals.

Prerequisites:
General chemistry equivalent to KJM100. Biochemistry equivalent to KJB200 (can be taken the same semester).
Recommended prerequisites:
Organic chemistry equivalent to KJM110.
Mandatory activity:
All lectures about the laboratory course (14 hours). Participation in the laboratory exercises. Handing in the laboratory journals.
Assessment:
Laboratory journals count 25 % and a written test (2 hrs) counts 75 %.
Both parts must be passed.
Nominal workload:
Lectures: 14 hours.
Laboratory exercises, with preparation and writing of laboratory journals: 96 hours.
Individual study: 40 hours.

Reduction of credits:
It is not possible to receive credits for both KJB201 and KJB210. KJB210 incorporates KJB201.

Laboratory work: 6 hours per week for 8 weeks.
Examiner:
An external examiner approves the examination questions and marks a minimum of 25 selected examinantion papers. The internal examiner grades the laboratory journals.
