Course contents:
The laboratory course is built up as follows: 8 or 9 exercises, each lasting about 6 hours, one exercise each week.
14 lectures (7 x 2 hours).
Writing of journals, length 8-15 pages, five or six of these in total. Filling out laboratory reports for the other excercises.
Usually group work with two students in each group.
Learning outcome:
The students will learn elementary biochemical techniques:
- Pipetting of small volumes.
- Elementary Spectrophotometry.
- Standard Curves.
- Measurement of protein concentrations.
- Measurement of enzyme activity, including enzyme kinetics.
- Chromatography of proteins.
- Gel-electrophoresis of proteins.
- Measuring anti-oxidants and vitamin C.
- Gels and viscosity.
The laboratory course will give some depth study of some part of KJB200.

Assessment:
Lab journals count 25 % and a written test (2 hrs) counts 75 %.
Both parts must be passed.

Reduction of credits:
It is not possible to receive credits for both KJB201 and KJB210. KJB210 incorporates KJB201.

An external examiner approves the examination questions and marks 25 randomly selected examinantion papers. The internal examiner grades the laboratory journals.
