Teaching exam periods:
This course starts in Spring parallel. This course has teaching/evaluation in Spring parallel.
Course frequency: Annually
First time: Study year 2004-2005
The contents of the course may be split into two parts: the building blocks of cells and the metabolism of cells. Themes in this course:
- Enzyme kinetics
- DNA and RNA
- Molecular biology
- Control of blood sugar levels by hormones
The students will learn about the structure and functions of important molecules in living cells. Amino acids, proteins, DNA, RNA, carbohydrates and lipids are particularly important. A central topic is how information is transferred from DNA to the rest of the cell. The students will also learn how enzymes contribute to and control biological processes, and that biochemical reactions are 100 % stereospecific.
The students will understand how cells gain energy and the basic metabolism of the organism and of the cell. Students will understand what happens in a cell under defined conditions such as starvation, lack of oxygen or intake of nutrients.
