Course contents:
An interdisciplinary course on equine science from a national and international perspective. The course will provide the student with basic knowledge on breeding, nutrition and ethology. The course will also include topics like training and performance, reproduction, diseases and health, law and research related to equine science.  
Learning outcome:

Knowledge:

  • Understand breeding and the challenges related to conservation of the Norwegian, and other international, horse breeds
  • Understand genetic traits, and the relationship between breeds and their use
  • Understand the digestive system of horses and nutrient digestion
  • Understand the origin of horses, basic behavior and welfare
  • Understand horse signals and communication and how to use this for assessing horse welfare
  • Understand horse behavior and its relation to the environment and use of horses

Skills:

After the course, the students will have in-depth knowledge on equine science, and the student will have the skills to redefine existing knowledge, so that they can evaluate possibilities, constraints and consequences when using horses for different purposes.  

Competences: 

The students will have competences and skills so that they can solve practical challenges related to the use of horses, and they can implement knowledge into practice and innovation, and use their knowledge to communicate with relevant stake holders in the equine industry

Learning activities:
The course includes lectures, exercises, project, digital group presentations, excursions, and project work. The project is an individual interdisciplinary project examining an relevant challenged from two or more sides related to the course
