Course contents:
Our electric power systems face major restructuring. For example, they will be carbon-free and undergo a switchover to digitization. One challenge is that a larger part of the electricity will be generated in distributed renewable, uncontrollable, often local sites with different performance in large numbers. At the same time the system should be able to handle heavy sources and sinks for electric power and energy by building HVDC cables to other countries and that nuclear power is phased out in Sweden. Well-functioning electric power and energy transfer will be an important key to switch to renewable society for secure exchange of electrical energy and power quality. The course will provide a deeper insight and understanding of our complex power systems. The course will also provide insight into how ICT and computer sciences are used to plan, monitor, manage and maintain tomorrow's power system. The course highlights how modern IT technology can be used in existing power systems is now undergoing considerable changes in terms of both manufacturing, transfer and use of electrical energy and power. The course will include a one-hour lecture on a topic that students choose.
Learning outcome:

Get a basic understanding of the future digital European electric power system:

Introduction to power transmision lines and systems. Basics on power markets. 

Voltage levels, tranmsmission and distribution grids. 

Radial, meshed and ring grids.

Power lines and cables and their properties. Design.

Earthing and grounding. Personel safety.

Over head (OH) lines, pylons, fundaments, insulators (Planning, design, construction).

Introduction to the electrical power grid and power systems, the requirements for power systems. Political framework for today's power system, reasons for change, renewable energy, changes in production and consumption (eg electric cars). Power system infrastructure - Overhead lines, cables, drives etc, Grid management, real-time monitoring and risk analysis Network planning - N-1 criterion, probabilistic methods. Norwegian power system in the European perspective. Operating and marketing solutions for the electric power system, the PMU (Power Management Unit), real-time control. Challenges and trends in today's power system, power system balance, frequency quality, power reserve in rotating masses.

Learning activities:

Lectures 13 weeks, 2 x 2 hours per week. Exercise sessions by agreement with the teacher.

1-2 excursions to e.g. transformer stations, operating centrals for energy supply.

Mandatory activity:
Compulsory hand-in assignments. Rules for approving mandatory activities will be announced when the course starts.

Examiner:
The external and internal examiner jointly prepare the exam questions and the correction manual. The external examiner reviews the internal examiner's examination results by correcting a random sample of candidate's exams as a calibration according to the Department's guidelines for examination markings.
