It there are not enough slots in group one the students will be ranked by their ECTS credits.

Students taking the course for the first time have lab priority.

Course contents:
During the first 5 days of the course there are lectures in the morning and tutorials on the afternoon. Day 6 starts with an intermediate exam in the morning from 8-10. The same day in the afternoon, there is a lecture about report writing. The day after, there is a one day tutorial on report writing with tutors present. Here the students write their first report, which is based on measurement data the students obtain (not measure themself). Thereafter a period of 8 days with lab exercises follows with 5 lab exercises for each student. Each lab exercise takes approximately 3 hours. After each lab exercise the students prepare reports. Oral presentation of the last lab report.
Learning outcome:
To gain theoretical and practical knowledge and skills on the principles of measurement. To be able to present measurement results. To be able to evaluate the results of measurements and measurement uncertainties. To know physical and geometrical optics. To know the physical pinciples behind some of the most widely used sensor technology. To be able to make a written report. To be able to present lab results orally.
Learning activities:

The Course contains:

LECTURES where central ideas, theory and examples are covered.

EXERCISES that illustrate use and understanding of central concepts.

LABORATORY WORK where the student gains skills in the use of scientific equipment and in planning and conducting an experiment.

REPORT WRITING where the student produces written reports with a clear presentation of the measurement results and measurement uncertainties. Oral presentation where the students learn to present results orally.

Teaching support:
Fronter will be used actively. Tutors are accessible outside the structured teaching time.
Taylor: An Introduction to Error Analysis. Selected Chapters from Tipler: Physics.
FYS101, FYS102, MATH111, MATH112.
Recommended prerequisites:
STAT100, FYS102.
Mandatory activity:

Every exercise must be done.

The first report exercise must be done.

The 5 laboratory exercises must be done.

Written journal.

Of the 7 obligatory activities (1 intermediate exercise, 1 report exercise, 5 written reports for laboratory exercises), 5 must be approved.

Non approved reports cannot be redelivered the same term.

Students who have all 7 obligatory activities accepted have passed the course and do not need to take the final exam. Students who have 5 obligatory activities accepted, have passed the obligatory part, but need to take and pass the final exam of two hours. Students who have less than 5 obligatory activities accepted, cannot take the final exam.
Nominal workload:
Organized lectures: 55 hours. Group work in pairs and self study: 85 hours. Preparation for written exam: 10 hours. Total: 150 hours.

The external and internal examiner jointly prepare the exam questions and the correction manual. The external examiner reviews the internal examiner's examination results by correcting a random sample of candidate¿s exams as a calibration according to the Department's guidelines for examination markings.
