Course contents:
  • Introduction to specific public health challenges in a selected non-Norwegian culture.
  • Introduction to relevant theories describing how factors at system, culture, political and social levels may be of significance for health and well-being for people in a global and local context.
  • Introduction to methods and actions to promote health and well-being in the general population and in selected vulnerable groups.
  • Professional discussions that can contribute to the development of theory- and evidence based policy, network and intersectoral collaboration that can result in better health in the population.
Learning outcome:

Following the graduation the student will:


  • Have knowledge about cultural, political and social factors of sigbificance for health and well-being for people both globally and locally.
  • Have advanced knowledge of specific public health challenges related to cultural and national issues.
  • Have advanced knowledge about efforts to promote health in selected non-Norwegian cultures.


  • Can reflect critically and independent about cultural, political and social factors of significant for health and well-being for people both globally and locally.
  • Can contribute to the developement of theory.- and evidence-based policy, networks and intersectoral collaboration that can result in better healh in the population.
  • Can apply actions to promote health.
  • Can reflect critically about actions to promote health based on cultural, political and social issues.


  • Can apply their knowledge and skills about cultural, political and social issues of significance in the public health work.
  • Can analyze and handle ethical issues related to cultural, political and social factors of significance for public health.

Lectures, seminars, student presentations and self study

Scientific articles and books. An overview of literature will be available upon the start of the course.

Type of course:
The course is based on intensive workshops
In this course we collaborate with various educational institutions offering intensive "summer school" courses, and the entire teaching in will take place at the selected non-Norwegian educational institution. The evaluation will take place at NMBU. The content of this course will depend on what course is actually offered, as this will vary from year to year. Also, the exact time of the intensive will vary, but the exam will be in the August block. Per 2017 the course offered take place at Dalhousie University, Halifax, Canada. The course is called "Chronic Condition Management ELS" and goes on from July 17 to August 11.
