Emphasis is placed on understanding what creates engagement and participation. The basics of occupational science are to explore how participation in activity relates to the situation or context in which the activity takes place. Knowledge of why and how engagement and participation in activity occurs is then used to better understand how to promote the health and well-being of peoples. Emphasis is placed on various forms of barriers or challenges that can prevent different groups from engaging in meaningful activity, such as cultural, social and structural factors.
