The course will provide empirical knowledge and a theoretically informed understanding of the role and work of IOs in IR. It draws on scholarly literature and debates about IOs as agents of or arenas for state power and IOs as agents in their own right, as well as theories about international bureaucracies, advocacy networks, trans-governmental networks, epistemic communities, communities of practice, and IR theory more generally.
Learning outcome:
The course seeks to give an advanced, graduate Level introduction to the emergence, expansion and influence of International Organizations, with an emphasis on the post-Cold War period. It will also provide a good overview of the daily life of IOs, both global (esp. UN, World Bank) and regional (esp. NATO, EU, AU, OSCE), as well as of IO-IO cooperation and competition.Those who complete the course should be able to grasp the role and power of IOs in IR in general, and in the international order and in governing global politics in particular.
Learning activities:
The course will go over 12 weeks with eight lectures (two hours each), of which one will be held by a guest lecturer. The remaining four sessions will be organized as seminars. All teaching will be in ENGLISH.

Office hours and procedures are established at the first class meeting. A course schedule is handed out at the same time.

General knowledge of international relations and international politics.

Mandatory activity:
One assignment (book review, article review or other) (pass/fail), that must be passed to qualify for the final exam.
Assessment:
A final grade will be assigned at the end of the course, based on a 3-hour written exam (100%). The compulsory assignment (book review, article review or other) must be passed to qualify for the exam.
Nominal workload:
300 hours.

Type of course:
8 x 2 hours lectures and 4 x 2 hours seminars.
Examiner:
One internal and one external examiner will grade the school exam. The internal examiner will evaluate the assignment.
