Course contents:
The course is presented through lectures that thematically describe different subjects within ecology. The lectures will to a large extent be based on scientific papaers on sentral ecological processes. In addition, collokvia are used to support the learning process.
Learning outcome:


An understanding of empirical and theoretical ecology. Good knowledge of various processes within ecology, such as natural selection, popualstion dynamics, community ecology, trophic interactions, and biogeography.


The candidate should acquire good skills in the application of ideas and methodology in the subject field of ecology. The candidate should become skilled in critical thinking, and in gathering and analysing information.

General competence

The course seeks to develop the candidate"s ability to understand and evaluate the structure and functions of ecosystems. The ethical aims are to show that ecology as an academic subject is value-neutral, as well as give an understanding of the diversity of life forms that represent different solutions to environmental challenges.

Lectures and group discussions.
Teaching support:
The students learning can be supported by discussions with teachers during office hours.
Text-book: Ecology 6th Edition (Krebs, C. J.) + collection of scientific papers
ECOL100/ECOL110, BOT100 and ZOOL100.
Recommended prerequisites:
Written examination (3 hours) at the end of the course.
Nominal workload:
Structured teaching: 34 hours. The students" own effort: ca. 260 hours.

Quality assurance by the use of an external examiner with long experience with the level of the subject at NMBU as well as at other national teaching institutions.
