Course contents:
The course is built up of several topics: (i) Relevant concepts and models (from economics and political science). (ii) The evolution of the Norwegian Agricultural System. (iii) The content and effects of important agricultural policy tools. (iv) Consequences of possible changes in the industry's operating environment, including changes in agricultural policies.
Learning outcome:
Knowledge about: (i) Degree of mobility of essential inputs in agriculture; (ii) Opportunity cost and pricing of inputs; (iii) Partial equilibrium models and important supply and demand shifters; (iv) Economic return (ground rent etc.); (v) The evoution of the Norwegian agricultural model; (vi) Policy goals and main features and effects of policy tools as: Import regulations (including EEA, WTO, international markets), Market regulations (main focus on dairy, meat and food and feed grains), Structure- and production regulations, Subsidy programs with emphasis on policies with a structure and/or district profile.
Skills: Describe and analyze consequences for Norwegain agriculture of possible changes in the industry's operating environment, including changes in national agricultural policies and/or international relations and markets.
General competences: Gain a better understanding of how changes in technology, national policies, international agreements, national and international markets may alter a business sector's operating environment.

Lectures, class discussions, individual literature studies, group projects and presentations.

Recommended prerequisites:
Basic knowledge in Microeconomics. ECN110 or an equivalent course.
Mandatory activity:
Participation in a group project and presentation of the group project in class. Evaluation: Pass/fail. Mandatory activities are valid for re-examination, but must be written again if you take the course the next time it is given.
Assessment:
Written examination, 3,5 hours (100%).
Nominal workload:
300 hours.
Entrance requirements:
Minimum requirements for entrance to higher education in Norway (generell studiekompetanse).
