The goal of this course is twofold: First, the students shall acquire basic knowledge about the development of the global economy in a historical perspective, focusing on the period after 1500. Three interrelated themes are highlighted: (i) Economic growth (ii) Inequality and (iii) Economic globalisation.
The second goal is to stimulate learning, and to develop the students writing skills, through the systematic use of writing exercises.
After completing the course, students should:
- Have gained knowledge about the main development trends in global economic history, with an emphasis on the period from around 1500 to today.
- Be able to account for and discuss various explanatory models/theories on key turning points in global economic history.
- Have gained basic knowledge about the historical development of inequality between and within countries.
- Have gained knowledge about the history of and driving forces behind economic globalisation
- Be able to reflect on the limits to economic growth and the possibilities for a more sustainable economic development
- Be able to use historical knowledge to reflect upon present day .
- Have basic knowledge about, and practice in, planning, structuring and writing analytical texts.
Lectures, discussion groups, plenary discussions, group work, presentations, writing exercises and student peer-review.

In addition, a list of articles and book chapters will be presented at the beginning of the semester.
Two written assignments and two peer-reviews submitted during the semester. The assignments and peer-reviews must be done individually and they will not be graded. Approved assignments and peer reviews are valid until the next time the course is offered.
Portfolio: individual term paper (70%) and written exam in education, 90 minutes (30%). No re-examination is offered.
Minimum requirements for entrance to higher education in Norway (generell studiekompetanse).
Type of course:
