About this course

The course is an introductory course in economics, with special emphasis on development, environmental and natural resource economics, policy analysis with emphasis on environmental issues and sustainable development.

Issues and concepts discussed in the course include inequality, technology, population, growth, scarcity and choice, social interactions, game theory, mutual gains and conflict, firms, supply and demand, markets and market failure, economic efficiency and public policy, external effects, renewable and non-renewable resources, climate change, cost benefit analysis, sustainable development.

Learning outcome

Knowledge:

  • Show basic knowledge of economic issues such as inequality, technology, population, growth, scarcity and choice, social interactions, game theory, mutual gains and conflict, firms, supply and demand, markets and market failure, economic efficiency and public policy, external effects, renewable and non-renewable resources, climate change, cost benefit analysis, sustainable development.

Skills:

  • Explain and use simple economic models.

General competence:

  • Communicate the core ideas, concepts and analysis in the course to others.
  • Lectures, compulsory assignments/exercises and individual reading.
  • Final written in-class examination (3 hours) accounts for 100% of the grade.
  • External examiner will participate in the assessment of the examination process.
    • Excursion to Norges Bank.
    • Written assignments: Three out of four assignments must receive a passing grade.

    Mandatory activity is valid until the next time the course is offered and for re-examination.

  • Lectures: 2 x 2 hours per week for 12 weeks
