Aim

Introduce pathology and common diseases in the most common domestic species. Basic diagnostic imaging, pre-, peri- and post-operative nursing, anaesthesia, emergency medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics and general genetics are also included. In conjunction with disease processes nutrition will also be covered. Nursing is an overall topic of the module.

After the end of teaching the students shall be expected to:

Knowledge:

• Have sound knowledge of disease processes, diagnostic work-ups and treatment regimes for the most common diseases.
• Have a sound overview of preventive health measures in production animal medicine.
• Have sound knowledge of the concepts of asepsis, hygiene and hygiene measures as well as hygiene and disinfectant products and their use. 
• Sound knowledge of diagnostic modalities and areas of use.
• Knowledge and understanding of medical calculations.
• Have a conscious attitude and knowledge of ethical pain relief in animals.
• Have sound knowledge of anaesthetic drugs, pharmacological properties of the most commonly used drugs, physiological prosesses in the body as a result of the most common drugs and their side-effects.

Skills:

• Radiology/diagnostic imaging practical and theoretical- positioning, exposure.
• Obstetrics with a focus on nurses role in recognising abnormalities and owner information and aiding the veterinarian
• Pediatrics with a focus on the nurses role in caring for neonatal animals and owner/breeder information
• Reproduction.
• Genetics with a focus on healthy breeding.
• Common diseases within organ systems with a focus on caring, medicating and managing the patients.
• Nutrition during disease and other special requirements e.g post-operative patients.
• Preventive health large animals with a focus on the nurses role in advising clients on hygiene and improving health measures in herds.
• Fluid therapy and dosage calculations within fluid therapy and medication in general.
• Anaesthesia and sedation with a focus on the administration of anaesthesia, monitoring, administering, maintaining and post-operative care.
• Preparing surgical patients.
• Instrumentation nomenclature, maintenance, hygiene.
• Pain relief: Evaluation of surgical patient with regards to care and management.
• Care of patients pre-, peri- and post operative
• Routines in the operating theatres including preparations and hygiene and waste management.
• Administration of medication.

Teaching methods and approach

Teaching takes place primarily through lectures, but also demonstrations, practical exercises and time is set aside for some self study.

Most lectures are posted on the student learning platform (Canvas), some lecturers give hand-outs before the lecture, beyond that the students are requested to study reference litterature and find other relevant literature at the library.

Examination

Four digital quizzes (60% to pass) during the semester are a study requirement and assessed to a pass/fail.

In addition, the student must pass a test in medication calculation. This must be 100% correct. The test can be taken until it has been approved. In order to start the 3rd year of the Veterinary Nursing program, the student must have passed all compulsory activity in DYR206 by August before the start og the 5th semester of the study program. 

The student will normally be permitted to sit the final exam even if all the mandatory teaching are not approved, but credits in the subject will not be awarded until all study requirements are approved and the final examination has been passed.
