The course is aiming to give the students a thorough insight into the functioning of international commodity markets (supply, demand, storage). Considerable weight will be put on establishing knowledge about the main commodity exchanges, hereunder the price formation, spot-futures relationships, and hedging and investment strategies, price analyses and technical forecasting models. The students will during the course also learn facts about production and consumption of commodities, international players within production, processing and distribution. The teaching is based on classical lectures, guest lectures and producing a report. The students will work in groups and present the report in seminars, and all the groups will present their report throughout the course. The students are also required to produce a blog on their given commodity, and to participate in a real time investment game. If possible, a voluntary trip to London is arranged to visit different finance and commodity institutions. There is mandatory presence on minimum 2/3 of the lectures and seminars.
After finishing the course the candiate should have knowledge about:
- the functioning of international commodity markets (price formation, supply, demand, storage)
- the functioning of the large commodity exchanges, hereunder price formation, spot-futures price relations, hedging and investment strategies
- the production and consumption og commodities globally
- international players within production, processing and distribution of commodities
After finishing the course the candidate should be able to
- obtain data on commodities, commodity prices etc. from central databases like Datastream and the large commodity exchanges
- analyse data (prices, turnover etc.) from the commodity markets to develop investment- and hedging strategies
- competence within (investments, risk management)
- competence in data collection and analysis of commodity markets
Lectures, guest lectures, investment game and work on semester report.
Will be given at the start of the course.
BUS220 or equivalent, BUS322 or equivalent, microeconomics, statistics / econometrics.
Basic International trade
Participation of at least 2/3 of the lectures / seminars. Delivering price forecast for assigned commodities. Blogging about allocated raw materials, participate in the investment game. Present partially completed report 1 time during the semester, as well as being an opponent on another presentation. A retake exam is not organized in this course. Those who do not pass need to take the whole course next time the course is organized.
Students are evaluated on the basis of a submitted semester report, blog activity and oral examination. The oral examination is based on the report, curriculum, lectures and blog. All components must be passed in order to pass the course.
The course is for master students enrolled in the following programs: Master in Business and Administration and Master in Economics. It is also open for other master programmes from NMBU with satisfactory competence.
