Course contents:
The course provides a basic introduction to Microsoft Excel, an essential computer tool used in business. An important objective of the course is that the students can use Excel in other courses.
Demonstrations and practical exercises in the use of formulas and functions, cell formatting, graphics, data tables, sorting and filtering, PivotTable, import of external data, goal seek, optimization and macros.
Demonstrations and practical exercises in making simple economic models and calculation of interest, cash flows, net present value and internal rate of return.

The candidate has:
- knowledge about the different components of Excel
The candidate can:
- use the help tool in Excel
- create, save and open Excel work books
- input data into cells
- format cells
- create formulas and use Excel functions
- copy data and formulas
- create charts in multiple formats based on numerical data
- make simple economical models
- calculate how various inputs influence model output by using Data Table, Goal Seek and Solver
- sort and filtering data
- import data from external sources
- make PivotTables
- create and interpret simple macros
Skills:
The candidate can:
- develop efficient and structured models in Excel
- work fast with Excel
Learning activities:
Lectures: Demonstration of Excel. Exercises in the computer lab.
Syllabus:
Excel textbook/handbook (will be presented at course start).
Prerequisites:
ECN110 Introduction to Microeconomics (can be taken concurrently)

Assessment:
Take-home exam using Excel: 40 % of total grade. Duration 2,75h.
Final written exam: 60 % of total grade. Duration 3h.
Since the course has continuous exam, exam will only take place in autumn semester. There will not be any new/postponed exam in spring semester.
Nominal workload:
150 hours.
Entrance requirements:
Minimum requirements for entrance to higher education in Norway (generell studiekompetanse)
Type of course:
Lectures: 2 hours per week. Excercises: 2 hours per week. Total: Approximately 52 hours.
Examiner:
External examiner will control the quality of syllabus, questions for the final examination, and principles for the assessment of the examination answers.
