First time: Study year 2013-2014
Genes and genomes; structure and function in plants and animals. Key methods in gene and genome analysis. Practical use of this methodology in plant, animal and aquaculture production. Societal and ethical issues related to these technology applications. Lectures on key parts of the teaching goal are giving during the first part of the course. In addition, the students work with a term project. During the last part of the course, the students present the term project for the class and teacher.
A candidate who has completed the course is expected to have achieved the following learning outcomes, defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:
Can present and explain the basic organization and function of genes and genomes in eukaryotes.
Can explain key methods for detection of specific DNA sequences and DNA sequencing.
Can explain basic mechanisms like DNA-replication, gene expression and epigenetic regulation.
Can provide a basic explanation of methods for linking genotypes with phenotypes.
Can provide examples and explain use of this knowledge in plant, animal and aquaculture production.
Can identify and reflect on key societal and ethical questions raised by this technology.
Students can present and explain papers in genomics that are not too complex.
Students can work independently and in groups to gain new knowledge.
Students can search for and evaluate different sources of scientific information.
Can present and argue for own viewpoint in scientific discussions.
Lectures, group work, self-tuition, term project and presentation for class.

BIO120 and BIO130
Approved project report, including an oral presentation.
The final exam is a multiple choice test. The project report must be approved before the exam can be completed.

We do not recommend BIO200 for students who have not completed BIO120.
