Course contents:

The lectures cover the following topics:

  • Micro-organisms and you.
  • The prokaryote and eukaryote cell types.
  • Microbial metabolism.
  • Growth of micro-organisms.
  • Control of microbial growth.
  • Mutations in micro-organisms and their significance.
  • Simple classification of viruses, bacteria and fungi.
  • Antibiotics.
  • The main features of applied microbiology and the role of micro-organisms in nature.

The laboratory course gives a thorough introduction to the use of light and phase contrast microscopy. Training in the use of aseptic work technique. Studies of the growth conditions of micro-organisms and how to prevent growth of undesired micro-organisms.

Learning outcome:
The students will get an overview over various micro-organisms and their role in nature.
Students will be able to use aseptic techniques as well as light and phase contrast microscopy in the study of different micro-organisms.
They should also be able to set up a simple experiment for testing a hypothesis.
Learning activities:
Lectures.
Laboratory exercises.
Journal writing.
Individual study.
Teaching support:
Supervision is given in connection with the lectures and laboratory work.
Lecture notes will be available on Fronter.
Syllabus:

Recommended Textbook will be given at the first lecture and on Fronter .

For the laboratory exercise: Tronsmo/Mathiesen: "Laboratorieøvelser i BIO130 Mikrobiologi". Compendium, NMBU 2015.

Prerequisites:
General chemistry equivalent to KJM100
Recommended prerequisites:
BIO120 Genetics, or equivalent.
BIO100 Cell Biology (may be taken in the same semester), or equivalent.
Mandatory activity:
Laboratory exercises.
Handing in lab.reports.
Assessment:

Understanding of experimental data is evaluated in the laboratory journal, and this, together with your activity in the laboratory course, makes up 30% of the final grade. The journal has to be handed in within a given deadline. The journal has to be approved to be admitted to the exam.
An approved lab journal is valid for the following two years.

The theoretical knowledge will be tested in a 3-hour written exam (that has to be approved) and counts 70 % of the final grade.

Nominal workload:
Lectures: 24 hours.
Laboratory exercises: 20 hours.
Preparation for laboratory assignments and journal writing: 20 hours.
Individual study: 86 hours.
Entrance requirements:
Special requirements in Science
Type of course:
Lectures: 2 hours per week. The lecture period ends with a course summary and discussion of the required reading. A compulsory laboratory course is given in two-hour sessions 2 days a week, for 5 weeks.
Examiner:
An external examiner approves the examination questions, and marks 25 randomly selected examination papers.
Allowed examination aids: No calculator, no other aids
Examination details: Continuous exam: A - E / Ikke bestått
