Course contents:
Introductory course in biotechnology and chemistry, including information technology. Lecture in bioethics and plagiarism. Lectures and laboratory exercises from different fields in biotechnology and chemistry. Excursion to businesses in the biotechnological and chemical industry. An introduction to laboratory health and safety (HSE).
Learning outcome:

After completing "Introduction to biotechnology and chemistry" (BIO101) the student will:

  • Have a basic overview on chemical, bioinformatic and biotechnologic research at NBMU.
  • Be able to carry out simple laboratory experiments within microbiology, chemistry, genetics, molecular biology, biochemistry and bioinformatics.
  • Be able to reflect on some basal ethical and moral aspects of current biotechnological/chemical research and science.
  • Be able to retrieve and summarize scientific information.
  • Be able to produce a scientific poster and present the content orally
  • Have obtained some knowledge on biotechnological and chemical industry.
  • Have gotten to know lecturers and several fellow students.
Learning activities:
Lectures. Excursion. Instructions in use of computers for making posters. Writing reports from laboratory exercises. Oral presentations of poster.

Instruction in use of computers for literature searches and poster preparation.  Canvas.

Prerequisites:
Higher education entrance qualification.

Mandatory activity:
Lectures and laboratory exercises. Handing in lab reports.
Assessment:
Poster presentation. Approved reports from laboratory work.
Nominal workload:
Three weeks in August with: Lectures: 20 hours. Laboratory exercises with preparation and journal writing: 50 hours. Excursion: 15 hours. Poster preparation and presentation: 65 hours.
