About this course

Introductory course in biotechnology and chemistry, including bioinformatics. Lectures in bioethics and plagiarism. Lectures and laboratory exercises covering various fields in biotechnology and chemistry. Excursion to businesses in the biotechnological and chemical industry gives insight into how chemical and biotech industry work towards reaching the UN sustainability goals. An introduction to laboratory health and safety (HSE).

Learning outcome

To pass the BIO101 course, the student must participate in all laboratory exercises and obtain a "passed" grade for all laboratory reports and the poster exercise.

After completing "Introduction to biotechnology and chemistry" (BIO101) the student will:

Knowledge

Have a basic overview of chemical, bioinformatic and biotechnologic research at NBMU.
Have obtained some knowledge on biotechnological and chemical industry and their efforts in working towards the UN sustainability goals.
Know both lecturers and several fellow students.

Skills

Be able to carry out simple laboratory experiments within microbiology, chemistry, genetics, molecular biology, biochemistry and bioinformatics
Be able to produce a scientific poster and present the content orally
The student is able to perform the preparations, techniques and analyses employed in the course.
The student masters the instruments and equipment used in the course.

General competence

Be able to reflect on some basal ethical and moral aspects of current biotechnological/chemical research and science.
Be able to retrieve and summarize scientific information.

BIO101 is evaluated in a continous process:
- Participation in the lectures and laboratory exercises.
- Participation in the excursion.
- Approved reports from laboratory work.
  Students get feedback on the lab journals handed in.
- Poster presentation.
  Students get feedback on their poster draft by their supervisor and on the finished poster by the sensor.
