The course will focus on new and sustainable raw materials that can be used in fish feed and that do not compete with raw materials that can be used directly as human food. It will be focused on renewable feed ingredients including, vegetable feed raw materials, genetically modified plant crops, insects, yeasts, bacteria, macro- and microalgae, krill and other marine species. There will be a focus on suitability in relation to production efficiency, fish health, welfare, and effects on the product quality. Processing of the raw materials will also be emphasized, including innovative bio-refining methods to convert natural bio-resources into high-quality fish feed ingredients. Furthermore, the course will focus on the environmental footprint of the raw materials (LCA) which is a crucial element in sustainable feed production.
- Students will acquire a broad overview of alternative feed raw materials for farmed fish and their suitability
- Students will gain knowledge of the use of life cycle assessment as a basis for the selection of sustainable feed raw materials
- Students are able to participate in the public debate on topics and contribute to the further professional development of new sustainable feed ingredients
