Course contents:
The course gives basic insight into historical development and contexts that are of importance for the practice of urban and regional planning. The students learn about urbanization in Norway, the history of architecture, international urban planning ideals through the ages and the emergence of urban and regional planning as a discipline. The course focuses on training academic working through writing, discussion, presentation and critical thinking with regard to the subject of the course.
Learning outcome:

The student should be familiar with historical developments and contexts that are important for the practice of urban and regional planning. The student should be familiar with urbanization in Norway, be able to describe different types of buildings and how the architecture has developed, know about international urban planning ideals through the ages and the emergence of urban and regional planning as a discipline.

The student should understand and be able to discuss the importance of different urban planning ideals for urban development through the ages and the historical connection between planning and society.

The student should be able to argue, by using relevant literature and other sources, for the importance of the qualities and consequences that have arisen from urban planning ideals and be able to explain historical values and contexts that lie in the built environment.

Learning activities:
Lectures, literature studies, discussion groups, precentations, mandatory assignments. Opponent for fellow students, evaluation of each other's assessment.

Mandatory activity:

Written submission of 3 assignments, presentation of an assignment in plenary, submission of assessments for fellow students´s assignments (fellow student peer review).

A minimum of 80% attendance is required in lectures.
