Course contents:
Introduction to work and organizational psychology. Topics that are covered include motivation and reward systems, learning in organizations, problem solving and decision processes, personality and leadership, attitudes and organizational culture, working environment, social networks, and groups and teams. 
Learning outcome:


  • Be aware of the most important theories within organizational psychology
  • Understand how empirical research is used to test and support theories in psychology
  • Understand how psychological theories may be applied to improve productivity and well-being in organizations. 


  • Be able to differentiate between key assumptions related to different psychological theories and approaches. 
  • Be able to evaluate typical challenges in organizations (e.g., related to motivation, learning, or decision making) in light of psychological theories and principles
  • Be able to identify which psychological theories and methods that may be utilised to address typical challenges in organizations. 

Other learning intentions

  • Increased awareness of the importance of psychological processes related to work life. 
  • Increased motivation to learn more about the subject. 
Learning activities:
Core lectures, exercises and small experiments, class discussions and written project work. "Flipped classroom" may be employed as a teaching method. Active participation is expected
Teaching support:
None in particular other than contact with the teacher.

Textbook or courseback (to be announced at start of course). 

If a Norwegian textbook is used, international students may use an English textbook with similar topic coverage given consent of the lecturer. The same holds for articles in a courseback (most of which will be in English; but substitutes may be found for the Norwegian language articles).

Mandatory activity:
This course has a compulsory assignment, which may consist in several parts (for example, an exercise conducted during the lecture, as well as a brief essay about the exercise that the student completes after class). The assignment will be described in more detail in the lecture plan, which will be published the week before the course commences. Compulsory assignments are normally valid until the next time the course is offered.
Written examination, 3.5 hours, counts 100%.
