Åsgeir R. Almås

Professor

  • Soil and Water Science Section

Since 1999 (PhD graduation), I have been appointed as Post Doc, research scientist, research professor (since 2014) and project leader in several projects related to either soil contaminants or plant nutrition. Currently 100 % engaged as professor (since June 2023).

My work is focused in two areas:

Biogeochemistry of soil contaminants

Research on the biogeochemistry of metal in soil, sediments and fresh water; The metal speciation in soil solution and it´s impact on both soil microbial biology and plants have had special focus. Technologies: WHAM/Model VI and DGT/DIFS technique; PICT making use of 3H-Leucine incorporation. In addition to work on the geochemistry of metals in soil, I have been involved as MSc- and PhD student supervisor, investigating the interaction of PFAS in soil and leached water and their fate in the environment.

Plant nutrition and agronomy

I am also involved in agricultural related projects in Norway, Europe, Asia and East-Africa; in parts related to determination of trace element (e.g. As, Cd, Fe and Zn) and major element (P) speciation in soil and their biogeochemistry in soil plant systems using WHAM and/or DGT/DIFS. Recently also directed to biogeochemical studies resulting from salt inundations of cultivated and non-cultivated soils (3H-Leucine incorporation and rhizoboxes), and recycling seaweed in soil.
