The University Centre in Svalbard (UNIS) is the world’s northernmost higher education institution, located in Longyearbyen at 78º N. UNIS provide research-based education of the next generation of Arctic experts in biology, geology, geophysics and technology.

NB! Be aware that a semester at UNIS is not to be regarded as an exchange, and that you therefore need to apply on your own. In other words, you do not need a nomination to apply. Speak with your study coordinator about how UNIS courses can be adjusted to your study plan.

About UNIS

UNIS was established in 1993 to provide university level education in Arctic studies, to carry out high quality research, and to contribute to the development of Svalbard as an international research platform. UNIS’ geographical position gives it a unique advantage, enabling students and faculty to use nature as a laboratory, arena for observation and data collection. UNIS works closely with the mainland universities and the UNIS courses are intended to complement the teaching given by the mainland universities.

Who can apply?

All students enrolled at Bachelor-, Master- or PhD level at NMBU can apply. Studies at UNIS will be most relevant for students taking courses within biology, geology, chemistry, microbiology, environment and natural resources, geophysics and technology. The minimum academic prerequisite is 60 ECTS in general natural sciences, in addition to course specific requirements listed in each course description. All courses are taught in English.
