Open Access - Publishing agreements

NMBU participates in a selection of publishing agreements. These agreements cover about 8500 journals, both hybrid (can choose between open access and publishing behind a paywall) and gold (open access only). The cost for publishing in hybrid journals is typically fully covered, while a discount is provided for gold journals (with some exceptions).

  • Criteria for use of publishing agreements

    Common for all agreements:

    • Corresponding author must be affiliated with NMBU*.
    • NMBU must be names as affiliation in the article.
    • Recommended license Creative Commons CC-BY.
    • Articles must accepted within the agreement duration period.
    • Other costs (e.g. colour costs, page charges etc.) are not covered by the agreements.
    • For discounted journals, the author/faculty must cover the rest of the cost.

*It is possible to use the agreements even if corresponding author is no longer at NMBU. As long as the work was carried out here and NMBU will be listed as affiliation, the criteria have been met.

    • Checking journals

Kanalregisteret (Norwegian register for scientific publishing channels) is the best tool for checking if a journal is covered by one of our agreements. Be aware that there are agreements we do not participate in, so follow the step-by-step below to find the correct information:

      1. Search for journal title.
      2. Check that the journal is approved (level 1 or 2).
      3. Look for 'included in publishing agreement'.
      4. Click on the journal title and scroll down to find more information about the agreement.
      5. Check the list '+ Show who is included in the agreement'. NMBU has to be on this list.
      6. Keep in mind that gold journals (open access only) typically only receive a discount. Information about discount sizes is availabale in our agreement overview.
  • Opportunities for open publishing (Open Access)
    1. Gold Open Access
The author of a scientific work decides for himself whether he/she wants to publish his work in an Open Access journal. Researchers can find open access journals in the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) and in the Norwegian Register for Scientific Journals, Series and Publishers.

Gold Open Access articles are published in journals where all the articles are open and with a fully open license (CC-BY). For these articles, the publisher's pdf (published version) can be self-archived in Cristin.
    2. Publish openly in journals via the Read-and-Publish agreements.
The following publishers are included in the agreements: Elsevier, Springer, Taylor & Francis, American Chemical Society (ACS), SAGE, Oxford University Press.
      - Corresponding author must be an employee or student at NMBU.
      - Articles published openly with a CC BY 4.0 license can be shared freely.
      - NB! not all journals published by these publishers are included in the agreements. Look up the journal in the Register for Scientific Journals, Series and Publishers to see if it is covered by an agreement that NMBU takes part in.
    3. Green Open Access - archiving in open institutional archive
      - Green Open Access means that scientific articles are published in a closed subscription journal, or a gold Open Access journal and then made available by self-archiving (uploading) in Cristin for later availability in the institutional archive NMBU Brage.
      - For articles published in a closed subscription journal, it is the last accepted manuscript version after peer review (post-print) that must be uploaded and archived. The post-print version is identical to the publisher's pdf, but without the journal's logo and layout.
    4. Hybrid publishing
A hybrid article is a scientific work that is published in a closed subscription journal. The author can then redeem the scientific work and make it open through a publication charge (APC).

  • What do the research funders demand?
    • The Research Council and the EU require open access to all scientific articles that are the result of research with their funding.
    • It is encouraged to choose a journal with open access (Gold Open Access) or to publish through the national Read-and-Publish agreements.
    • Green Open Access is also a good alternative.

  • Open Access in EU

OpenAIRE is a network of Open Access repositories, archives and journals that support Open Access policies. OpenAIRE has started out as a policy support mechanism for the EC (FP7 pilot and H2020 OA policies), with the aim to be the European scholarly communication hub providing its services to many European funders.
