About this course

Introduction to relevant systems for on-site treatment, including nature-based treatment methods, of sanitary waste water and source-separated wastewater systems. Description of treatment processes and effects of discharges to water recipients. Health aspects of wastewater treatment, transport and inactivation of parasites, bacteria and viruses in treatment filters, soil and groundwater. Wastewater solutions with source separation in combination with urban agriculture and parks. Introduction to quantitative health risk assessment.

Learning outcome

Students will have knowledge of decentralized wastewater treatment solutions, and understand how natural processes can be used in water and wastewater treatment. The students must also be able to identify and explain which parameters are the basis for sizing and choosing a technical solution based on local conditions. The students should be able to design small-scale treatment solutions and understand how we can design systems for optimal resource recovery. Students must be able to assess the impact that wastewater discharges can have on health and the environment.

    KJM100 and MILJØ210 (or equivalent)

    Basic knowledge of (water) chemistry, microbiology and geology

    Oral exam (100 %). Pass/fail.
